Amazon Seller Account Deactivated: Why It Happens and How to Get It Back

What a deactivation means under Amazon's own agreement, how to appeal from Account Health, what happens to your money, and the honest answer on permanent deactivations.

“Your Amazon selling account has been deactivated” is the email every seller dreads. Listings stop, payments can be held, and the forums fill up with guesses. This guide sticks to what Amazon itself publishes: the grounds in its Business Solutions Agreement, the appeal steps in Seller Central help, its own advice on writing an appeal, and what its agreement says about your funds. Then it covers the hard question: what to do when the deactivation looks permanent.

What does it mean when your Amazon seller account is deactivated?

A deactivated Amazon seller account has lost its selling privileges: your listings stop selling and Amazon may hold your payments. Amazon uses "deactivated" for the action you see in Account Health. Many deactivations can be appealed from Seller Central; a termination of your selling agreement is Amazon ending the relationship.

Amazon's help page on appealing an account deactivation says that failing to meet its performance metrics and policies may lead to the temporary deactivation of your account, removal of listings, or limits on the Merchant Fulfilled Network. Temporary is the key word: a deactivation with an appeal option on your Account Health page is a problem to solve, not the end. If you are in the first hours of a suspension, our suspended Amazon account emergency checklist covers the first 72 hours step by step.

Why does Amazon deactivate seller accounts?

Amazon's Business Solutions Agreement lets it suspend or terminate an account immediately for an uncured material breach, suspected deceptive, fraudulent or illegal activity, harm to customers, sellers or Amazon, an Account Health Rating below its deactivation threshold, or when the law requires it. Your notice should name the reason.

These are the five grounds in Section 3 of Amazon's Business Solutions Agreement, the contract every seller accepts:

GroundWhat the agreement says
Uncured material breachYou materially breached the agreement and did not cure it within 7 days of a cure notice. Amazon can shorten or waive the cure period when the breach exposes it to liability toward a third party.
Deceptive, fraudulent or illegal activityYour account has been used, or Amazon's controls identify that it may be used, for deceptive, fraudulent or illegal activity.
Harm to othersYour use of Amazon's services has harmed, or Amazon's controls identify that it might harm, other sellers, customers or Amazon's legitimate interests.
Account Health RatingYour Account Health Rating falls below Amazon's published threshold for deactivation.
Required by lawAmazon is legally required to act.

How the Account Health Rating leads to deactivation

The Account Health Rating is a score from 0 to 1,000 that shows your risk of deactivation. Green (200 to 1,000) is healthy, yellow (100 to 199) is at risk, and red (99 or lower) means the account is eligible for deactivation or already deactivated. A single critical violation, such as a product found counterfeit through a test buy, qualifies an account for deactivation on its own. Amazon also says it may deactivate an account immediately, whatever its score, when it suspects fraudulent, deceptive, illegal or otherwise harmful activity, including attempts to circumvent its systems. For the metrics to watch before any of this happens, read our Amazon suspension prevention guide.

How do I reactivate a deactivated Amazon seller account?

Go to Account Health in Seller Central and click Reactivate your account at the top of the page. Follow the instructions to submit your appeal, which can include a questionnaire, acknowledging the violation, a quiz or supporting documents, then click Submit. Amazon says to expect a reply within two days.

  1. 1

Read the notice and Account Health first

Note the exact violation, the ASINs listed at the bottom of the notification and the documents Amazon asks for. Amazon's agreement says it will tell you the reason and any options to appeal, unless doing so would hinder an investigation of deceptive, fraudulent or illegal activity.

  2. 2

    Do not rush an appeal

A fast, vague appeal invites a rejection or a request for more information. Find the root cause first; Amazon's own guidance says deactivations can come from a combination of issues.

  3. 3

    Do not open another account

Amazon can act on any other account you have operated, and deactivates accounts that try to circumvent its systems.

  4. 4

    Collect the documents now

Supplier invoices (Amazon says some products need invoices from the last 365 days), order and shipping records, and proof of every fix, with dates.

  5. 5

    Write the plan of action

Root causes, the actions already taken, and the steps that stop it happening again, backed by the documents. Our plan of action guide walks through it.

  6. 6

Submit from Account Health and watch your email

Click Reactivate your account, complete what Amazon asks, and submit. If Amazon asks for more information, answer from View Appeal on the Account Health page.

Amazon's own guidance on writing an appeal is short: be clear, concise, factual and direct; explain every issue and its root causes; give specific actions with dates; and send supporting evidence for every product under review, with the important parts highlighted. Our step-by-step guide to writing an Amazon plan of action turns that into a template with worked examples.

Can a permanently deactivated Amazon seller account be reinstated?

Sometimes, but not always, and less often than a suspension. When Amazon says it will not reinstate an account, or has terminated the selling agreement, the standard appeal route is usually closed. Some of these cases are still reversed, mostly where the seller can document that the reason was wrong or has been fully fixed.

Sellers say an account is “permanently deactivated” or “banned” when appeals have been denied and Amazon's message says the account will not be reinstated, or when Amazon has terminated the selling agreement. Most of those decisions stand, and nobody honest will promise you otherwise.

What tends to make one worth a closer look: a specific reason in the notice that you can show was wrong with records; evidence that the cause has been fixed for good; real trading history behind the account; and an earlier appeal that missed the real root cause rather than one that was turned down on the facts. The hardest cases are verified counterfeit, fraud findings and repeat violations after earlier warnings.

If every appeal is exhausted, the agreement's dispute route is binding individual arbitration, and that is a question for a lawyer, not an appeal writer.

Not sure whether your deactivation is worth fighting?

We look at your notice, your Account Health page and your documents before you pay anything, and tell you honestly whether it is worth appealing. Amazon account reinstatement is a $3,500 flat fee, quoted before you commit.

What Happens to Your Funds and Other Accounts

Section 2 of the Business Solutions Agreement lets Amazon withhold payments for as long as it determines the related risks persist, and establish a reserve on your account. Where it decides an account, or any other account you have operated, was used for deceptive, fraudulent or illegal activity, including selling counterfeit or stolen goods, it may withhold payments permanently. Amazon says it will offer an avenue to appeal a fund-withholding decision, and that completing that appeal is required for further disbursements.

The same “any other account you have operated” wording is why opening a second account during a deactivation is a bad idea: it gives Amazon a reason to act on both.

Amazon Deactivation FAQ

What does it mean when your Amazon seller account is deactivated?

A deactivated Amazon seller account has lost its selling privileges: your listings stop selling and Amazon may hold your payments. Amazon uses "deactivated" for the action you see in Account Health. Many deactivations can be appealed from Seller Central; a termination of your selling agreement is Amazon ending the relationship.

How do I reactivate a deactivated Amazon seller account?

Some of these cases are still reversed, mostly where the seller can document that the reason was wrong or has been fully fixed.

What happens to my money when Amazon deactivates my account?

Amazon's agreement lets it withhold payments for as long as it decides the related risks persist. If it decides an account was used for deceptive, fraudulent or illegal activity, it can withhold payments permanently, but it says it will offer an appeal of that decision, and completing the appeal is required for further disbursements.

Should I open a new Amazon seller account after a deactivation?

Not to get around a deactivation. Amazon's agreement lets it act on your account or any other account you have operated, and Amazon says it deactivates accounts that try to circumvent its systems. A new account opened by a deactivated seller can be linked back to the old one and lost as well.

What is the difference between a suspension and a deactivation on Amazon?

Sellers use the words loosely. Amazon's agreement speaks of suspending or terminating an account; Seller Central's Account Health page speaks of deactivation and reactivation. What matters is the notice: whether it gives a reason and an appeal option, or says the account will not be reinstated.

How much does help with an Amazon deactivation cost?

Ecom Circles charges a $3,500 flat fee, quoted before you commit, for Amazon suspension and termination recovery. We look at your case before taking your money, and if a deactivation does not look worth appealing we tell you so rather than selling you the service.
